What is some of the controversy behind this festival?
There are many controversies in the topic of Bullfighting. One is whether it is an art or a sport. Some people think it is a sport because it’s you and the bull playing a sort of game. But others think it’s art because of how majestic and graceful the matador has to be when taking the Bull’s life. Another controversy is weather it is slaughter or honor towards the bull. The way they stab and cut the bull is considered slaughter but some say to die an area full of people is honor.
Jasmine: Some of the controversy behind the bullfighting is that it is seen as animal cruelty. The biggest issues I believe with this "sport" is that there is no logical reason as to why these animals...or any living being should be treated in such a way.
How have certain groups taken action against this festival?
Jasmine: Some groups have tried to cause distractions such as "running of the nude" to take people's attention away from the bullfighting. There are also protest as well that take place but the largest even and most known event is the running of the nude.
The people against the bullfights protest as loud and as diverse as they can, on the streets, on the Internet, in buildings, everywhere. the protestors formed different groups against the bullfighting such as F.A.A.C.E (fighting against animal cruelty in Europe). They also worry about the abandoned dogs that are near by while the bulls are running, although I’m guessing a very little bit of progress has been made to stop the bullfights but still they try and try.
PETA has tried to get tourists to boycott the San Fermin Festival. They think that it is cruel because most of the animals that participate in it are killed later that day. However most of the people who live in Pamplona say that it is tradition and a way of their lives. They know that people around the world think its nonsense but they don’t exactly care.
Also, there were some cases in which The Navarra Court of Justice is taking action against parents/ guardians of children who get hurt while running with the bulls. Really they don’t want under aged people participating in this event. But if they do and get hurt then the organism will bring the case to court.
Do you agree with them? Jasmine: I personally do not agree with such a sport. This sport is cruel and makes a mockery of animals. I believe that a thing such as bullfighting is something that is used so people can enjoy the sight of pain. The thought of watching something tortured to death is just wrong.
We are not ones to agree with such a thing, killing bulls in such a way is worst than what the way they kill cows. Why would someone torment a bull just for entertainment, no matter how aggressive their nature is, you can’t kill because of it.
